Abstract
Near- and mid-infrared spectral studies of minerals are reviewed.
Single-crystal anisotropy measurements provide information about:
cation site occupancy in orthopy roxenes; Fe2+/Fe3+
zonation in clinopyroxenes; water molecules in cordierite, and
metamictization and water content of zircon. Studies of manganese
oxides identify mineralogy in sub-microcrystalline minerals and provide
structural information about disordered oxides and their water content.
