Fluorite Visible Spectra (generally 350 - 1500 nm)
Fluorite, CaF2, is colorless when it has the ideal formula. Rare earths and radiation damage are common causes of color in fluorite.
Images of representative fluorites
- Fluorite green spectrum;
Fluorite, green,
Felix Mine, Azusa, Los Angeles County, California; 5.96 mm thick. The
bands near 580 and 400 nm
are associated with trapped electrons (F-center) in the presence of
yttrium (Y3+) ions.
The band near 714 nm has been associated with a F-center near cerium
(Ce) ions.

- Fluorite pink spectrum;
Fluorite, pink,
Huanzala, Peru. This spectrum shows the 485 nm band from a O23-
molecular ion
stabilized by an adjacent Y3+ ion in addition to the 400 and
580 nm bands from the
Y associated F-center. Data Files: 21K;
- Fluorite purple spectrum;
Fluorite, purple,
unknown locality; 2.20 mm thick. The band near 560 nm is associated
with colloidal calcium. Data Files: 21K;
- Fluorite
bright green spectrum; Fluorite, green,
Brazil. This bright green
variety is known locally as chromium-green fluorite. The color is not
due to chromium, but rather the bands near 690, 611, 440 and 422 nm
are associated with divalent samarium (Sm2+) ions.
Data Files: 21K;
- Fluorite yellow spectrum;
Fluorite, yellow,
localilty unknown, 3.43 mm thick. Data file: 21K
- Fluorite pale blue spectrum,
Fluorite pale blue,
unknown locality; 4.86 mm thick. Data file: 20K
- Fluorite deep blue spectrum;
Fluorite, GRR 3171, blue,
Chifeng Prefecture, Inner Mongolia, China, plotted as 1.0 mm thickness.
Data file: 20K
- Fluorite yellow-brown; Fluorite, GRR 2819, yellow-brown, Bluffton, Ohio, 3.86 mm thick. Data file: 21K
